Our moderator is Trista Perez-Crawford, PhD. Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine and SCCAP Diversity Committee member.
In 2017, the APA published the Multicultural Guidelines: An Ecological Approach to Context, Identity, and Intersectionality. These guidelines are pivotal to the work that we do as researchers and practitioners. Given the diversity of the country and sociopolitical climate, it is important to understand the current science and how to apply this in your clinical work. This webinar will overview the 2017 APA Multicultural Guidelines and explore how to implement some of the guidelines in your practice. This will help enhance your skills in addressing intersectionality when working with children and families.
After this webinar participants will be able to:
1. Identify the guiding principles of multicultural competency.
2. Understand the Ecological Model of the Multicultural Guidelines.
3. Apply the principles of multicultural practice to working with diverse families

Dr. Alfonso Mercado is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychological Science and Department of Psychiatry in the School of Medicine at the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley. He is a Board of Trustee for the Texas Psychological Association where he also serves as the Diversity Division Chair, is an active member of the American Psychological Association, and the National Latino Psychological Association. Dr. Mercado is a Diversity Delegate at the APA’s Practice Leadership Conference and serves on the APA Committee on Rural Health.
Dr. Erlanger “Earl” Turner, is an Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Education and Psychology at Pepperdine University. Dr. Turner is a nationally recognized expert and has published numerous book chapters and articles on multicultural psychology. He served as the 2017 Chair of the APA Board for the Advancement of Psychology in the Public Interest, is the author of African American Mental Health: Innovations in Research and Practice, and President of APA Division 37.
