Since Jeffrey Arnett introduced the concept of emerging adulthood as a new phase of life representing the transition from adolescence and early adulthood, there has been a proliferation of research on the nature of emerging adulthood across cultures. Although characterized as a time of reflection, optimism, and exploration, emerging adulthood can also be characterized as a time of high risk for social and psychological difficulty. This presentation will draw upon that dualism to provide clinicians interested in this age group with a developmental perspective on the organization and delivery of psychological services designed to better meet the needs of young people making this transition from adolescence to early adulthood.
Learning Objectives for the webinar:
- Identify three social, economic, and technological trends that have changed the transition from adolescence to early adulthood in a postindustrial society
- Explain why emerging adulthood can be characterized as both a time for reflection, optimism, and exploration and a time of high risk for social and psychological difficulty;
- Describe two approaches to the organization and delivery of psychological services to better meet the needs of young people making the transition from adolescence to early adulthood.
The webinar is appropriate for pre-doctoral, post-doctoral, and Masters level professionals.
Presenter Bios:
Thomas McMahon, PhD is a professor emeritus in the Departments of Psychiatry and Child Study at the Yale University School of Medcine. From 2004 through 2021, he was director of the Young Adult Service at the Connecticut Mental Health Center in New Haven Connecticut.
Dr. Amanda Zayde, PsyD is co-Founder and co-Director of the Becoming an Emerging Adult at Montefiore (BEAM) program, Founder and Director of the Connecting and Reflecting Experience (CARE): a transdiagnostic, bi-generational, mentalizing-focused group parenting program, Associate Director of Psychology Training, and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Chelsea VanderWoude, PhD is a clinical child and adolescent psychologist in the Ohana Medical Group at the Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula in Monterey, California. She is also the chair of the Emerging Adulthood Special Interest Group within the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology (APA Division 53).
